Boss 2048 — Rules and Strategy
A boss wanders your 4×4 board. Surround it with tiles of value 8 or higher and they attack automatically. Read its telegraphed next move, stack combo multipliers, and bring it down within a 60-turn limit.
The one-line version
Regular 2048 is about growing tiles. Boss 2048 is about spending what you grew. Stacking a big number in a corner doesn't win the fight — it only wins the fight once you drag that tile next to the boss.
Core rules
- The board is 4×4, merging works like ordinary 2048. Swipe or use arrow keys to slide tiles; matching values merge into the next power of two. The tile cap is 4096.
- The boss is a wall that occupies a cell. Tiles cannot slide into the boss's cell or into a corroded (frozen) cell.
- The boss telegraphs its next cell one turn ahead. Whatever tile sits on that translucent «ghost» cell gets destroyed outright when the boss arrives — no matter how large. Keeping that cell empty is your first line of defense.
- After moving, the boss checks its four neighbors and attacks. Any adjacent, non-frozen tile worth 8 or more attacks automatically. Damage is the sum of the attacking tiles' values, multiplied by a combo bonus: 1 direction ×1, 2 directions ×1.25, 3 directions ×1.5, a full 4-direction surround ×2.
- Attacking tiles get halved, not destroyed. An 8 that attacks becomes a 4; a 16 becomes an 8. You keep the tile, just weaker.
- If nothing attacked that turn, the boss corrodes a tile instead. One adjacent tile worth less than 8 gets frozen for 2 turns — it can't move or merge until it thaws.
- Drop the boss's HP to zero within 60 turns to clear the floor. Your board carries straight over to the next floor, and the next boss has more HP. Running out of turns, or a board that locks up completely, ends the run.
Strategy
1. Keep the ghost cell empty
The boss shows you exactly which cell it's about to occupy, one turn ahead. Any tile sitting there — however big — gets destroyed the moment the boss arrives. If you were saving that tile for a surround attack, it's gone for nothing. Check the ghost cell before every move you make.
2. Don't leave sub-8 tiles next to the boss
Anything under 8 can't join an attack. Worse, on a turn where nothing attacks, those small tiles are exactly what the boss corrodes. Keep low-value tiles away from the boss and only let 8+ tiles get adjacent to it.
3. Attack from multiple directions at once
The combo multiplier climbs from ×1 for one direction to ×2 for a full surround. Landing two or three 8+ tiles on different sides of the boss in the same turn deals dramatically more total damage than one big tile hitting alone — the multiplier does the heavy lifting.
4. Plan around the post-attack halving
An attacking tile doesn't disappear — it survives at half value. Budget for that: you'll need to re-merge it back up to 8+ before it can attack again, so line up your next merge before you commit the hit.
5. Expect the boss to change behavior below half HP
Once a boss's HP drops under 50% of its max, it switches to flee behavior — even the floor-1 boss, which doesn't normally flee at all. Whatever cornering trick worked before that point may stop working once it starts actively dodging into empty or low-density cells. Read where it's likely to run before you commit your next surround.
6. Don't rebuild a corroded tile before it's safe
Corrosion wears off after 2 turns, but on floor 3 and up — or against any enraged boss — a corroded tile gets halved again the moment it thaws. Resist the urge to keep merging into a frozen tile's neighbors; wait for it to thaw, check what's left, and replan from there.
FAQ
Does the puzzle change every day?
No. There is no date-based seed — it is pure freeplay. Floors continue indefinitely, and only your best floor reached is tracked.
Do I need an account?
No. You can play immediately with no sign-in.
Where is my progress stored?
In your browser only. It is never sent to a server — including your best floor reached.
Does the board reset when I beat a boss?
No. Your board carries over to the next floor. Only the turn counter refills to 40, and the next boss has more HP.
What does "best" actually measure?
The highest floor you reached in your best run so far. It's saved in your browser and compared against every new run.
Does the game end the instant the board locks up?
Not immediately. If corroded (frozen) tiles are the reason the board is locked, the game thaws them all once and rechecks. Only if you're still stuck after that does it count as a loss.
